Can I file for a Divorce or Dissolution during Ohio’s Lockdown?

Absolutely. Despite the uncertainty of the times and the Stay at Home order issued by Governor Dewine on March 23, you can still file for a divorce or dissolution in Ohio.

Although the domestic relations courts in Ohio have implemented some restrictions and safety protocols, the courts in Northeast Ohio remain open for new filings.

There are many steps you can take to begin preparing for your divorce case from home, including preparing the necessary financial affidavits, gathering the necessary financial documents, and hiring an attorney. Check out our Divorce Roadmap to find out all the steps that will need to be completed before your divorce can be filed with the court.

If you are hoping to get a dissolution and want to start the process from home, go to our Dissolution Resource page for more information and also download our Dissolution Checklist to get started.

While the Stay at Home order is in effect, most court hearings are being conducted over telephone and documents are being sent to the court electronically. These changes do not affect your ability to start a new divorce or dissolution. If you live in Northeast Ohio and have questions about court policies in your county, look up your court’s information here: Northeast Ohio Court Coronavirus Policies and Procedures.

Under Ohio’s Stay at Home order, legal services are deemed essential businesses. As we reported in March, Grisi & Budde remains open for business and are fully functional even while our employees work remotely. We have continued to file new case and provide consultations via telephone or video conferencing, so you can start your divorce case or begin your dissolution without unnecessary risk of exposure to the coronavirus.
